Phoenix diners have voted with their reservations, and the algorithm agrees. This is a legitimate arrival.
The Top 10 Had a Busy Week
Here's the thing about top-10 lists. They look static from the outside. They're not. This week, five restaurants broke into city top 10s across the country, and that's a meaningful number. Grey Ghost climbed into Detroit's top 10 at #8. Travail Kitchen and Amusements did the same in Minneapolis, also landing at #8. Reading Room cracked Tampa's top 10 at #8. And Oleana moved into Boston's top 10 at #9, which The New York Times Food section readers will recognize as a restaurant that has deserved that kind of recognition for years.
Five cities, five new top-10 entrants in a single week. The rankings are moving.
Atlanta Had a Rough One
Somebody has to talk about Atlanta. BoccaLupo dropped 9 spots to #11. Umi fell 9 to #14. Poor Calvin's slid 9 to #29. Three of the week's biggest fallers, all in the same city. That's a signal, not noise. Whether it's new competition pulling diners away or something softening in the data, Atlanta's mid-to-upper tier took a hit this week. Worth watching whether this is a one-week correction or the start of a trend.
Denver also had some turbulence. Olive & Finch dropped 10 spots to #95, the biggest single-restaurant fall of the week. Ten spots in seven days is a hard week by any measure.
Phoenix Is Also Sending Climbers From Below
While Tratto grabbed the headline, Phoenix had a full week. Proof Canteen climbed 8 spots to #77, the biggest gain of any restaurant on the board this week. Andreoli Italian Grocer moved up 7 spots to #72. That's two Phoenix restaurants in the top five climbers, plus a new top-10 entry. Food & Wine has covered the Phoenix dining scene's quiet surge for a couple of years now. The rankings are reflecting it.
The Broader Picture Isn't Pretty
This week's overall numbers are worth a look. Check the full rankings and you'll see what the data is showing at scale: 514 restaurants moved up this week, 1,548 moved down, and 638 stayed flat. That's a market under pressure. For every restaurant climbing, three are sliding. Michelin-starred spots aren't immune either. 34 starred restaurants gained ground this week. 95 lost it. Even a star on the door doesn't guarantee upward momentum in a competitive week like this one.
Opinionated About Dining has written extensively about how prestige and performance diverge in real diner behavior. This week's numbers are a case study.
Portuguese Is the Cuisine to Watch Right Now
It's a small sample, just three restaurants, but Portuguese cuisine averaged +2.3 spots this week across the board. That's a meaningful signal. When a cuisine is moving consistently in the same direction, something is happening in the market. Saveur has covered the American resurgence of Portuguese cooking with real depth, and the ranking data is starting to echo that coverage. Keep an eye on this one.
One to Watch: Elway's in Denver
We covered Elway's momentum last week, and it hasn't slowed down. Elway's climbed another 7 spots this week and now sits at #18 in Denver. That's a restaurant that has gained serious ground in a short window. The math is simple: if this trajectory holds, Denver's top 10 gets a new entrant next week. Or the week after. It's close enough that you can see it from here.
The Infatuation's Denver coverage has long positioned Elway's as a durably beloved room. The rankings are starting to reflect that. Come back next week to see if the breakthrough actually lands.
The top 10 isn't a waiting room. Tratto proved that this week by walking straight through the door. The question is who's next.
